EDITOR’S NOTE

Hello Readers,

Welcome to the July issue of Builder and Developer magazine. Though this issue may seem smaller than our June issue, it is just as chock-full of insightful columns, and informative features. We were thrilled with our last issue, which we took with us to PCBC in San Francisco at the end of June. Having just finished attending PCBC, we want to say thank you to all those who take the time to read our magazines and connect with us. It was so great meeting you all in person, and seeing all the cool projects, products, and people that go along with this industry.

I can’t believe the year is already halfway over! It seems to have flown by with all the amazing projects that we have been busy covering. This month is no different – we’ve brought to you, our readers, five amazing projects all highlighting sustainable features. Building green is something that has always been close to our hearts here at Builder and Developer, and we hope that these projects inspire you and yours to consider implementing green features into your projects. For our July issue we also had the pleasure to talk with the talented Sheryl Palmer, Chairman and CEO of Taylor Morrison since 2013, and discuss not only some of the biggest news of the summer (Taylor Morrison making a nearly billion-dollar acquisition of AV Homes) but also the importance of building sustainably.

“Taylor Morrison’s Elem3nts program relies on the nationally recognized Home Energy Rating System (HERS) to help homebuyers understand the energy efficiency of our homes,” Chairman and CEO of Taylor Morrison Sheryl Palmer explained. “A standard new home typically scores around 100, while a Taylor Morrison home receives a HERS rating in the 60 or 70s.”

July is one of the best months to become more aware of our environmental impact; the days are longer, the weather is warmer and we’re itching to be outside instead of stuck in an office under fluorescent lighting.

“According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average American spends 93 percent of their life indoors,” Scott Harris penned in his column on page 44. “Eighty-seven percent of their life is inside buildings, and another six percent of their life is inside automobiles. This only leaves seven percent of their entire life to live in and enjoy the great outdoors!”

Because of this, our July issue focuses on outdoor living. This issue highlights some of the best outdoor living trends of 2018. And we know, as builders, you’re eager to read about how you can better improve the outdoor spaces in the houses you create to better attract buyers.

As always, we are grateful to our advertisers, readers, and contributors for helping us make another great issue, and we hope you enjoy flipping through this month’s magazine.

Many thanks,

Abby Pittman
